Vote counting underway in Liberia elections

George Weah is considered one of the greatest African footballers of all-time and spent time at AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG and a host of other clubs.

Former global soccer superstar George Weah and Vice President Joseph Boakai will face off as Liberians get ready to choose a president.

"I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season", Weah said on twitter before the results were announced.

Liberia's National Elections Commission was expected to begin releasing provisional results Wednesday from the West African nation's presidential runoff as a football star and the vice president compete to replace Africa's first female head of state.

Weah supporters paraded through the streets of the capital Monrovia and honked vehicle horns to celebrate the news.

The run-off vote was delayed for over a month after Boakai and third-placed Charles Brumskine of the Liberty Party alleged widespread fraud in October's first-round vote, a challenge that the Supreme Court rejected this month.

Meanwhile, CDC Vice Chairman for Operations Mr. Mulbah Morlu has urged partisans to remain calm and wait for the official pronouncement from the NEC.According to him, it is clear that the CDC is now the ruling party, but notes that it is just the matter of days for the electoral house to declare them as victor.

The elections commission says Weah received 61.5 percent of the votes counted, while Vice President Joseph Boakai has received 38.5 percent.

Almost 2.2 million voters were choosing between the 51-year-old Weah and 73-year-old Vice President Joseph Boakai. Election officials put turnout at 56%.

Sirleaf is stepping down after two terms as president.
