Civil rights activist Erica Garner dies from heart attack

The beloved and outspoken Erica Garner had been fighting for her life since she suffered a massive heart attack a week ago, family members told the Daily News Thursday.

She is said to be remembered as a "human: mother, sister, aunt".

Erica was hospitalized at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn for the past week and was surrounded by friends and family who owned dire hopes for her recovery.

Among her survivors are two children, a daughter Alyssa and a four-month-old son, Eric; her mother, Esaw Snipes; and her siblings, Emerald Garner, Eric Snipes, Emery Snipes; and a half-sister, Legacy Garner-Miller.

Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner who became an outspoken activist against police brutality after her father's death at the hands of a NY police officer, died Saturday, according to her mother.

The video of the encounter traveled around the world as Garner's last words - "I can't breathe" - became a rallying cry for advocates of policing reform, as stories and videos about the deaths of black men killed by the police continue to draw wide outrage. Garner, 27, had suffered significant brain damage this week after a heart attack, representatives said. Doctors said the pregnancy had put a strain on her heart, which was later found to be enlarged. "No one gave her justice".

Garner was the daughter of NYPD chokehold victim Eric Garner, whose death fueled the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Now, unfortunately, she has passed away.

She emerged onto the scene after her father died while he was being arrested at Victory Boulevard and Bay Street in Tompkinsville for allegedly selling loose cigarettes in 2014. "The police are killing our people - that's reason enough not to fight amongst ourselves", she wrote.

"I'm struggling right now with the stress and everything", she said.

Even as Garner pressed politicians and law enforcement officials to hold the police accountable for her father's death, she was emphatic that her personal tragedy was also a public one. A grand jury declined to charge the officer, Daniel Pantaleo.

"We are just praying for a miracle", Rev. Al Sharpton told the Daily News after he visited Erica Garner in the hospital.
