SA tourist dies in Egypt balloon crash: ministry official

A hot air balloon carrying foreign tourists crashed today in Egypt's ancient city of Luxor, killing a South African tourist and injuring 12 others.

At least seven people were also injured in the accident and have been hospitalised.

A number of officials who have been quoted by Al-Ahram on condition of anonymity said the incident was caused by strong winds that caused the balloon to fall.

The health ministry said a woman was killed and 12 people injured but gave no further details.

New Zealanders are understood to have been involved in a fatal hot air balloon crash in Egypt.

Some 20 ambulances attended the scene of the accident, Egypt's state-run Mena news agency reports.

This was exacerbated by the 2015 Russian plane crash, which killed all 224 passengers and crew on board, majority Russian tourists. The tragedy came four years after a hot air balloon crash injured 13 tourists seeking an aerial view of the city.
