Small study suggests ibuprofen alters testosterone metabolism

Small study suggests ibuprofen alters testosterone metabolism

Scientists analyzed the hormones and blood of a group of 31 healthy white men between 18 and 35 years old over the course of six weeks.

Taking ibruprofen could negatively affect your sex life, a new study reveals.

The good news is that the problems required multiple weeks of constant ibuprofen use, so there's no indication that handling the odd muscle ache or hangover with ibuprofen will cause problems.

Despite the results, a lecturer says casual use of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) by men should be just fine. To compensate, the pituitary gland stimulates production of more testosterone - but eventually, the mechanism wears out and levels of the hormone drop throughout the body.

Men who dream of starting a family may want to pass on the ibuprofen the next time they have a headache.

However, researchers express worry that prolonged usage could lead to more permanent testosterone disruption, which could itself lead to serious health issues and the need for medical intervention.

The decreased ratio of testosterone to LH created a hormonal imbalance called "compensated hypogonadism" in the endocrine system, which regulates and controls hormones. Each dose was 600mg, equivalent to three over-the-counter pills.

Before you go raid your medicine cabinet, Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen.

This led, they said, to compensated hypogonadism, a condition linked to reproductive and other health problems normally found in elderly men. Tests showed their testosterone levels hadn't changed, although the testes weren't producing adequate levels.

Previous research by the team, which focused on pregnant women, had found that the use of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen during pregnancy affected the testicles of male babies.

14 of them were given daily doses of Ibuprofen, which professional and amateur athletes take. The other half took a dummy (placebo) tablet. The effect was apparent at two weeks and became more pronounced after six weeks of ibuprofen use.

While "it is sure" that the hormonal effects in the study participants who used ibuprofen for only a short time are reversible, it's unknown whether this is true after long-term ibuprofen use, study co-author Bernard Jegou, director of the Institute of Research in Environmental and Occupational Health in France, told CNN.

This resulted in hypogonadism, which is associated with infertility and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart failure.
