Snow falls in Tallahassee, other areas of North Florida

"It's snowing in Tallahassee, Florida for the first time in 28 years", Mike Seidel, a meteorologist and field reporter for The Weather Channel, tweeted on January 3.

Kids in Florida who have never seen snow got a chance to play by building snowmen and making snow angels.

Snow started falling on Tallahassee Wednesday around 8 a.m. EST, according to the National Weather Service.

At least 16 deaths were blamed on dangerously cold temperatures that for days have gripped wide swaths of the USA from Texas to New England. As the storm moved north, parts of Georgia and the Carolinas could get some snow, as well. Because of this "bomb cyclone", as it is known, forecasters have issued winter storm warnings from northern Florida to New England, a rare occurrence.

The last time Tallahassee had measurable snow was in December 1989, when 1 inch (2.5 cm) fell on the city.

State officials took safety precautions by closing roads and schools after icy roads caused a traffic accident. Charleston, S.C. saw at least five inches of snow by Thursday morning.

It marks the first snowfall in 28 years in Tallahassee.

In Central Florida, the state's largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay and SeaWorld's Aquatica were closed Wednesday because of the cold snap.

In Georgia, up to 6 inches of snow fell in Ellabell, 5 inches was measured in Pembroke, 4 inches accumulated in Nevils, and a general 1 to 2 inches of snow had piled up in Thomasville, Vidalia and as far east as Chatham County. Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches (8 to 13 centimeters) were possible in eastern North Carolina. But Florida, especially its northern reaches, can certainly see temperatures drop when cold air invades from the north, as it has over the last few days.

Zoo visitors, however, shouldn't expect to see any lions, elephants or gorillas native to Africa on view.

This will result in extreme weather conditions, including freezing rain in SC; blizzard warnings with 50-70 miles per hour winds for multiple states, including Virginia and ME; and snow where snow hasn't fallen in decades, like Tallahassee.
