Detroit automakers going head-to-head with new pickups

The Silverado will also be fitted with more aluminum and high-strength steel which will mean that the 2019 model will be lighter as well.

Chevrolet introduced the latest model of best-selling Silverado pickup truck Saturday evening, January 13 to kick off the North American International Auto Show from Detroit's Eastern Market. The new 2019 Silverado will have undergone over 11.2 million km of testing before the first buyer climbs aboard in the fall of 2018. Most the interior will remain unchanged but it will still get the upgraded infotainment system from Chevrolet.

This, the Silverado's most significant switch-up since 2014, has set its aim on not only matching its fellow Detroit-bred rivals but toppling them in the meantime. The doors, hood and tailgate are made of aluminum, but the cage protecting passengers is all steel, he said. The 3-liter and 6.2-liter engines can be paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

GM faces challenges in 2018 from the costs of launching the new large pickup trucks, rising interest rates in the United States and a likely decline in overall US vehicle sales, Stevens said.

"Truck customers told us they want the flawless truck for them and not a "one size fits most" truck, compromised for the masses", noted Mike Simcoe, vice president of global design for GM.

Engine-wise, buyers of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will be able choose from reworked 5.3L and 6.2L V8s that can shut down any number of cylinders at any time to maximize fuel economy.

There are six different versions available, spanning from entry-level "Work Truck" spec with black body panels, cloth seats and basic amenities to posh "High Country" that has nearly everything other than the kitchen sink thrown at it and enough chrome to blind oncoming drivers. The automaker is counting on strength in North America and China - and "improvement in South America" - to drive its performance in 2018. All told Chevy will sell eight different trim levels of the pickup, but Scheer believes that the Trailboss trim will be one of the most well-received. This ranges from the familiar LT model to the newly-introduced Custom and Trailboss versions. The boxes look similar to the Nissan Titan aftermarket boxes, but they also echo back to the long-gone Chevy Avalanche and slide-in box of current 2018 Silverado 1500 High Country. There are also now 12 tie-down points, each capable of supporting up to 500 pounds - twice as strong as those in the previous model. Other changes include available task lighting, a 120-volt power outlet and larger cutouts in its "CornerStep" bumpers to better accommodate steel-toed boots. Additional profit from other products that will use the truck's same basic frame and underlying components - including the GMC brand's version and SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban - combine to contribute the majority of GM's global annual profit, analysts estimate.

The new Silverado has a longer wheel base and more passenger and cargo space than the current model, yet is 450 pounds lighter. Wayne, Indiana, to make the new pickup trucks, it will shift some production to an Oshawa, Ontario, plant in order to build up to 60,000 vehicles and avoid missing sales.
