Mobile devices are even more vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre than computers

Intel that its patches to fix processors affected by the are causing computers to suddenly reboot on their own. He also said the company would send out initial versions of fixes for the buggy patches to customers by next week. On Jan. 11, Intel confirmed that some older Intel CPUs - specifically, Broadwell and Haswell - that had been updated with Intel's Meltdown and Spectre firmware patches were rebooting more frequently than they should be (see Spectre Reversal: AMD Confirms Chips Have Flaws).

Oracle declined to comment on the report.

Intel's executive vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group, Navin Shenoy, posted a new blog on the company's ongoing work at implementing a fix to safeguard users against being exploited by the Spectre and Meltdown flaws that were unveiled earlier in the new year. For common tasks such as running website servers, the patches caused a 2 per cent slowdown, Intel said.

At worst, Intel's testing shows performance can slow by as much as 25% in certain, data heavy workload scenarios.

Intel has also managed to reproduce the issue, and now it's working on coming up with a solution.

Impacts ranging from 0% to 2% on industry-standard measures of integer and floating point throughput, Linpack, STREAM, server-side Java and energy efficiency benchmarks.

An online transaction processing (OLTP) benchmark simulating modelling a brokerage firm's customer-broker-stock exchange interaction showed a 4% impact. For FlexibleIO, a benchmark simulating different types of I/O loads, results depend on many factors, including read/write mix, block size, drives and CPU utilisation.

With the FlexibleIO benchmarks, stressing the CPU fully during writes saw an 18 percent decrease in performance, because there was no headroom for processor utilisation, Intel said. This refers particularly to the Storage Performance Development Kit (SDK) which "provide a set of tools and libraries for writing high performance, scalable, user-mode storage applications". "For most consumer devices", Microsoft said in a statement, "the impact may not be noticeable, however, the specific impact varies by hardware generation and implementation by the chip manufacturer".
