Over 700 kilos of Cocaine has been found packed within pineapples

Nine people of various nationalities have been detained and 745 kilos of cocaine seized that was hidden inside pineapples, in a joint investigation by the authorities in Portugal and Spain, police announced on Wednesday. Along with the discovery of the smuggle, feds busted a lab that found cocaine being cut with additives.

The arrest came after an operation between the two countries. Police tell the publication that the findings are the result of an investigation that began in April of a year ago.

These smugglers had cleverly disguised the cocaine in cylinders covered in hardened yellow wax made to look like the fruit, and used emptied out pineapple skins as covering sleeves. Traffickers would pick up the cocaine from Terrassa every 15-20 days. The cocaine would then be shipped from Panama to Lisbon before ending up in laboratories near Madrid.

"This organized worldwide group had repeatedly brought large quantities of cocaine to the European continent", Portuguese investigators told Reuters in a statement. Hydraulic presses, packaging machines and over 400,000 Euros in cash were also seized in the raid.

This weird shipping method has been used before by drug smugglers.

Euro News reported that the Iberian Peninsula is known as a major entry point for cocaine and other drugs into Europe.
