Alexis Sanchez joins Manchester United in swap transfer with Arsenal for Mkhitaryan

Manchester United on Monday (Jan 22) confirmed the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan heading in the opposite direction.

"I am thrilled to be joining the biggest club in the world".

United's new number seven Sanchez, who missed Arsenal's win over Crystal Palace on Saturday while negotiations over a switch continued, posted a departing message on Instagram where he took aim at ex-Arsenal players that have been critical of him.

"I'm very happy that we could finish this deal and I'm very happy to be here".

"I remember today, a conversation I had with [Thierry] Henry, a historic Arsenal player, who changed club for the same reason and today is my turn".

Sanchez has been the main talk in the transfer window as he has been linked with a move to Manchester City but at the end he made a decision to join the red side of the city to play under Manchester United's manager, Jose Mourinho. "Thanks for every time you sing 'Alexis Sanchez Baby'".

After a transfer saga that dragged on for months, the United boss may understandably be feeling smug that he has finally got his man - and offloaded Henrikh Mkhitaryan at the same time.

Though United have a collection of senior players, the majority of the squad is relatively young.

"He creates chances, he defends well, he can absorb distances and he's very committed as well", Wenger said.

Sanchez had joined Arsenal in 2014 for £31.7 million after three years at Barcelona.

The 29-year-old Mkhitaryan has previously said his favorite team was Arsenal and his impressive technique, allied with Wenger's naturally attacking philosophy, should make him a good fit at the London club.

"I must say I always gave 100%, until the last day, when I asked to the Mister to be in the team, because I wanted to be a contribution".

Mkhitaryan's exit as part of the deal ends the Armenian's 18-month spell at rollercoaster Old Trafford since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016, with the 29-year-old signing with the Gunners until the summer of 2021. After scoring 47 goals in 141 matches for Barca, he went on to star for the Gunners, scoring 25 goals in his first season, 17 in his second and 30 last season.
