Martyrs' Day: President, PM pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi

Narendra Modi and Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal pay homage at the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi on Tuesday on the occasion of Gandhi's 70th death anniversary.

Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu, defense minister Nirmala Sitharaman, army chief general Bipin Rawat, Navy chief admiral Sunil Lanba and air chief marshal B S Dhanoa were among those present.

They paid tributes at Gandhi Ghat, a memorial of the Father of the Nation constructed along the banks of the Ganga, before observing two minutes silence. An all-religion prayer is also held in Rajghat to commemorate the sacrifice of the martyrs.

The Chief Minister said that this day of Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary also reminds us of the thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for independence of India.

Prime Minister Modi and cabinet ministers Arun Jaitley, Smriti Irani and Mahesh Sharma also took to the social networking site to pay tributes.

We will always remember their courage as well as dedication towards the nation, " the PM said. On this day in 1948, Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi fell to the bullets of a fanatic while he was coming out of a prayer meeting.
