Former backing singer SuRie to sing for UK at Eurovision

Introducing the seventh entry of the season: SuRie has won the British national final, Eurovision: You Decide, and will represent the United Kingdom at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest with the entry Storm.

"I can't believe this is happening, it's absolutely unbelievable", she said.

Speaking at the winners" press conference in Brighton, SuRie - real name Susanna Marie - revealed: "Sam Smith and I are from the same town.

SuRie is an actress and singer who has already performed at the Eurovision Song Contest when she appeared as a backing singer for Loïc Nottet in 2015 and Blanche at Eurovision 2017.

She has performed backing vocals for the likes of Chris Martin and Will Young.

She received the biggest cheer of the night from the live crowd in Brighton who began chanting her name after she was named victor by presenter Mel Giedroyc. "It's about positivity, diversity and celebrating all the good things".

The show is hosted by previous years' host Mel Giedroyc, being joined this year by Eurovision Song Contest 2015 victor Måns Zelmerlöw.

SuRie was one of six acts to take part in the BBC's Eurovision: You Decide 2018 programme, where viewers voted for their favourite song to take on Europe.

"To be involved from my country, I'm a proud Brit".

Talking of Sweden, 2015 victor Mans Zelmerlow is presenting tonight, alongside UK Queen of Eurovision Mel Giedroyc. "I normally like to be left alone for a few moments so I can calmly collect my thoughts and ensure I'm on the right spot at the right time, singing the right lyrics and that I haven't forgotten to put clothes on..."

Storm was penned by Nicole Blair, Gil Lewis and Sean Hargreaves, and will be performed by SuRie on the Eurovision stage in May.
