SOUTH AFRICA: Zuma future in balance as ANC leaders meet

He spoke to News24 on Tuesday evening after ANC's announcement that the much-anticipated national executive committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, had been postponed.

While the legislature is due to debate a motion of no-confidence proposed by the opposition Economic Freedom Fighters party on February 22, it "may not be needed", the ANC's chief parliamentary whip, Jackson Mthembu, told eNCA television.

His second five-year term is set to expire next year.

This was seen last December when the ruling party elected Ramaphosa as its President.

Mbete did not say when the speech might be held or who may deliver it.

The South African National Civic Organisation said Zuma has proved that we are no different to any other African country.

South African President Jacob Zuma attends an event during the 30th annual African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Jan. 28, 2018.

"We will tell you exactly what the NEC has decided post our meeting". The Democratic Alliance, a prominent opposition party, called for the address to be postponed.

The EFF, which has often disrupted parliament, has demanded that Zuma does not deliver the state of the nation address in Cape Town.

Ag shame! Fake news bots turn on Jacob Zuma, pitting him against Ramaphosa

Mr Zuma's presidency has been dominated by corruption scandals and he faces several court cases, including over 783 payments he allegedly received linked to an arms deal before coming to power in 2009. With Zuma's term ending in mid-2019, the two men and their allies, representing two centers of power, have been clashing over when Zuma should step down to give way to Ramaphosa.

During a meeting with the ANC top six officials on Monday, Zuma stuck to his guns and refused to step down.

He said there is also the sense that people are waiting for that moment: "there is a sense of expectation" - and of course there are also groups that support him and say that "if he goes there is going to be a civil war, but that is just a minority".

Secretary-general Ace Magashule also confirmed this, saying he arrived at the meeting just after 4pm, where he was excused and invited back in towards the end.

Many believe Zuma's departure is imminent following the SONA postponement - and indeed new president of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa said in a statement on Wednesday: "We will be able to communicate further on president Zuma's position as president of the Republic once we have finalised all pertinent matters".

Zuma has been embroiled in scandals, including multi-million-dollar upgrades to his private home with state money and his association with the Guptas, a business family accused of looting state enterprises and influencing Cabinet ministers for their own benefit.

The 80-member ANC committee could "recall" Mr Zuma from office - an instruction he could constitutionally refuse to obey, triggering political chaos.

"The allegations are completely baseless", Ngqulunga said in a statement. "There was a dominant view in NWC, but it wasn't the only view", she said.

ANC, divided on Zuma's fate, to meet today.
