YouTube star couple targeted by gunman in home invasion attack

"A search of Giles" cellular phone identified various notations identifying Megan Turney and Gavin Free by name", a detective wrote in the documents.

By 3:40 a.m. on January 26, Giles had arrived at the couple's Hyde Park house, just over a mile north of the University of Texas campus, and had woken them up with the sound of a gunshot and breaking glass, according to KXAN.

According to police it was the intent of Giles to cause harm to somebody inside the home. Giles fired at police, and an officer fired back, interim Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said. They hid in their bedroom closet and called 911 while Giles searched their home for them.

Free and Turney did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but both tweeted about the incident this week.

Christopher Giles, who police described as "single, lonely and disturbed", had made the 11-hour drive from Albuquerque, according to documents filed in the 2nd Judicial District Court.

Her British boyfriend, 29, co-hosts a YouTube video series of slow-motion videos entitled The Slow Mo Guys. Giles fired a single shot from his vehicle while backing out of the driveway.

Austin police say Giles fired both inside and outside the house, and when he fired at police, Officer Matthew Jackson returned fire. It seems like he envied Free's aspirational lifestyle and his romantic relationship with Turney.

The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office's preliminary findings suggest the fatal gunshot to Giles was self-inflicted, but an official ruling on his death is under review.

Nothing was stolen from the couple's house, the warrant says. "The Albuquerque Journal reports that not only did Giles" phone include notes demonstrating a "fondness" for Turney specifically, but showed hostility toward her boyfriend, Free. The search revealed Giles "was an avid player of video games and was known for watching YouTube videos".

The couple addressed the incident on Twitter Tuesday.

"Thank y'all so, so much for each and every kind message today and a special thank you to the Austin Police for their quick response that night and their ongoing support during this hard time". "It's been a rough time for Meg and myself the last few weeks but we are doing OK".
