Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland Elections 2018: All you need to know!

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is confident of winning majority in Left's stronghold Tripura and strengthen its footprint in other two northeastern states - Nagaland and Meghalaya - where results for Assembly elections will be announced on Saturday. Tripura went to the polls on February 18 and Nagaland and Meghalaya on February 27.

As far as exit polls are concerned, the BJP is expected to dethrone the Left from its citadel - Tripura.

Polling to Charilam (ST) seat in Tripura was postponed till the 12th of next month due to the death of CPIM candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma.

In Meghalaya, the election was countermanded in Williamnagar in the wake of the killing of candidate.

Despite large-scale snags in EVMs and VVPATs (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) over 92 percent (excluding 50,770 postal ballots) of Tripura's 2,536,589 voters cast their votes in a peaceful election.

The voter-turnout in Meghalaya was 75 per cent.

Even though Meghalaya is a small state, what makes this election special is that for the first time, national leaders across parties are taking a keen interest in the electoral politics of the state. Tripura has a Left Front government under Chief Minister Manik Sarkar; the Congress led by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is in power in Meghalaya, and in Nagaland the Naga People's Front with BJP's support is in power under the chief ministership of TR Zeliang. Political observers believe a good show by the NPP and the BJP will open the possibility of a post-poll alliance between these two parties. This was, however, a major dip from 2013 assembly election when the state had recorded about 90 per cent voter turnout.

The Congress fielded candidates for all 59 constituencies. State chief electoral officer Abhijit Sinha said the polling percentage was on the basis of voting till 4.30 pm and the figure was likely to go up as voting was completed in 1,500 out of the 2,056 booths across the state till then.

The CVoter poll predicts a 7.2%vote share for the Congress, while the other two polls have grouped the party with "Others", predicting it will get a low vote share.

Meanwhile, just 24-hours after the polls, state Congress president Kewe Khape Therie said the party "will draw a blank" as its candidates were on an "abandoned ship". While NPF is likely to get hold of 20-25.

NewsX, a national TV channel predicted a victory for the BJP alliance in 35 to 45 seats, 14 to 23 seats for the CPM and Left Front parties and one seat for "others".

The CVoter exit poll has predicted the ruling Congress suffering some setback with its tally coming down to 13-19 from 29 while the BJP is set to win 4-8 seats and around 16.5 per cent of vote share.

In Nagaland, the BJP has joined hands with the NDPP that was floated by former chief minister Neiphiu Rio.
