Statue politics: Vandals target statutes of Lenin, Periyar, Mookerjee and Ambedkar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday strongly condemned the vandalism of statues in many states and warned of stern action against those found guilty. The MHA in its earlier advisory had told all states and Union Territories that incidents of toppling and damaging of statues must be checked immediately and stern action should be taken to prevent such incidents. As per reports, the statue was brought down by suspected BJP workers who were celebrating their party's victory after the recently concluded Assembly elections. Reports state that six members of the group have been detained by the police in the incident.

The matter came to light when the people saw the damaged statue on Wednesday morning, sources said.

All the seven persons have been arrested, city police commissioner Rajiv Kumar said.

On Tuesday, two statues of Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov or Lenin were knocked down in Tripura's Belonia town.

BJP leader H Raja posted on Facebook, which was later deleted, he wrote "Who is Lenin and what is the connection between Lenin and India?"

The vandalisation of Ambedkar statue comes after a series of such incidents targeting statues and busts across the country. What connection India has with Communists?

A day later, a statue of Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was vandalised by unidentified men in south Kolkata. "Today Lenin's statue removed in Tripura, tomorrow it will be the statue of EV Ramasamy in Tamil Nadu". Restoration of the bust has been initiated, he said.

A statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar was vandalised in Haridwar district's Kanhawali village in the wee hours of Friday.

Last year, the Dalit community's call to install a statue of Ambedkar and the objection of the Thakur community to the proposal led to major caste violence.

It can't be confirmed whether the case is linked to the ongoing statue vandalism in various parts of the country or not.
