Sean McDonough leaving 'Monday Night Football' to rejoin ESPN's college football team

As first reported by the New York Post's Andrew Marchand, Sean McDonough is out as play-by-play announcer for the network's signature National Football League broadcast.

Marchand reported Friday that if the future Hall of Fame quarterback does become an NFL TV analyst, it will be for FOX's "Thursday Night Football" broadcast and not ESPN's "MNF". He called college football games for ESPN/ABC from 2004-15. He will also work college basketball games and The Masters Par 3 contest. Now he will be the new voice of "Monday Night Football".

Tessitore will replace Sean McDonough, who is reportedly moving back to college football broadcasts for ESPN after two seasons in the network's top NFL play-by-play role.

McDonough said in a statement, "Being the "Voice of Monday Night Football" was one of the great honors of my life", but he said he missed college football. "I look forward to reuniting with ESPN's college football team where I have so many close friends in front of and behind the camera".

Sports Illustrated can report that Sean McDonough has mutually agreed to return to college football for ESPN later this year.

ESPN has yet to comment on the report - or who could potentially replace McDonough in the aftermath.

Manning has been a hot commodity in the National Football League broadcasting circuit, with ESPN looking to replace lead MNF analyst Jon Gruden, now the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. With Peyton Manning saying no, ESPN has to decide whether to make another swing for the fences or to promote someone from within.
