'American Idol': Why ABC's Reboot May Not Be The 'Idol' You Remember

The swan song for American Idol was supposed to be two years ago. On Sunday's premiere, there are more cutesy-inspirational sob stories than trainwrecks, but this was already a trend in Idol's Fox incarnation, an evolution towards smiley positivity. Suffice it to say that, in order for absence to make the heart grow fonder, you have to be gone for more than 23 months.

The American Idol victor is determined by television viewers through public voting. Another Idol contestant has a backstory that features a cameo from Robin Roberts. Is it worth the time it takes away? And though we've only seen the first two-hour episode, they're off to a promising start. "At 15 years old, this isn't supposed to be happening", Richie raved. The teaser perfectly encapsulates the aim of Sunday's two-hour episode: to present "American Idol" - and its new judges - as light, fun and charming. The freak show aspect of the audition rounds could grate on you, or trend into bullying schadenfreude. Whether it was strategic, due to his name being in the news over sexual harassment allegations (which he has denied), or purely for scheduling reasons (he's on Live With Kelly and Ryan), we'll never know.
