No excuses for Champions League exit, says Man United's Matic

Though Romelu Lukakku pulled one back, it was too little too late as Manchester United's adventure in Europe ended abruptly.

Manchester United were thankful to goalkeeper David De Gea during the game after he made a number of crucial saves.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho looks dejected after the match against Sevilla at Old Trafford in Manchester March 13, 2018.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says Jose Mourinho blew their Champions League tie against Sevilla last night.

"I don't have a preferred opponent: they are all strong teams, but we will play to win against anyone".

Porto and Real Madrid both knocked out United at Old Trafford under Mourinho's stewardship and the Portuguese was quick to highlight the club's previous failings after their shock exit.

United went behind deep into the second half when substitute Wissam Ben Yedder came in to break the deadlock with a precise finish. "We tried, we lost and that's football".

"In the second half we were more clinical with Ben Yedder, he made the difference today". A 0-0 draw away from home, without an away goal scored, is no longer a positive result in elite European competition because most teams will attack away from home in the return leg in the hope of gaining the upper hand. Mourinho's decision to start the Belgium midfielder was perhaps understandable on the basis that the United manager needed somebody to nullify the threat of Sevilla's own towering midfielder, Steven N'Zonzi.

Mourinho's gamble on Fellaini appeared to have largely backfired as he failed to impose his physical presence on Sevilla's ball players in midfield. He collected Pablo Sarabia's cross and cut past Marcus Rashford, only to be denied by a thumping Eric Bailly tackle.

Minutes later it was Sevilla's turn to breathe a sigh of relief, as Lukaku turned provider for Lingard this time, but the outstretched hand of Sergi Rico tipped the Englishman's shot around the post for a corner that would ultimately come to nothing. "We are not the only team that invests money in players".

"We deserved this. We were patient, we knew that one goal could see us reach the quarter-finals".
