Federer rolls into fourth round

But Djokovic fell at the first hurdle with a shock loss to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel, who sent the out-of-sorts Serb tumbling with a hard-fought 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-1 victory.

Roger Federer made short work of Filip Krajinovic as he booked his place in the fourth round at Indian Wells with a 6-2 6-1 victory on Monday.

The 12-time major victor led 5-2 in the opener, but Daniel fought back well to clinch the first set on a tie-break, and although Djokovic pulled level, 61 unforced errors from the five-time champion saw Daniel clinch victory after two-and-a-half hours.

The 20-year-old has now won 11 of 12 final-set tie-breaks.

It was Djokovic's first appearance since the Australian Open after undergoing a minor surgery to fix an ongoing elbow injury, but it lasted just two and a half hours as he was knocked out by the 109 ranked Japanese 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.

"He puts the ball wherever he wants", Daniel said.

"It feels insane; I mean, I'm still in shock", said Anisimova, whose parents are Russian but who represents the United States, where she was born and raised. "When you go away from the game for over a two-month period, it starts feeling a little bit that way", the Express quoted Federer as saying. 'I think it speaks to my strengths on court, which is just being clutch and playing my best tennis in the big moments'.

Kevin Anderson put on a serving masterclass as he saw off Nicolas Kicker 7-6 (7-1) 7-6 (7-3). "He's got a lot of things going for him, that's for sure".

'You can't really look ahead to semi-finals, finals and speculate about who you could play, ' Federer said. "Back in the day, I used to play six matches in a row".

He won 7-6, 7-6.

Federer said he understands well how even a champion like Djokovic could be struggling to find his game so soon after having surgery. But he did say on Sunday that he initially did not expect to be ready to play in Indian Wells but recovered more quickly than anticipated. "I didn't serve too good today but overall I'm pleased". "Especially, you know, in a crowd like this, it's pretty unbelievable to do it, and I'm pretty happy... it's going to be a huge win for my career in the future, for sure".
