NCAA Latest: Michigan tops Florida State, back in Final Four

It's only for Leonard Hamilton to stay ageless in a nearly-70-year-old body, and lead perhaps one of his unlikeliest teams in recent memory to Florida State's first Elite Eight since 1993.

With 13 seconds remaining, Florida State's PJ Savoy forced a three-pointer but missed and MI grabbed the rebound but the Seminoles decided not to foul, throwing in the towel and letting the clock run out to secure Michigan's trip to the Final Four.

As a result, any hopes MI had of jumping on Florida State in the same way it did Texas A&M - when it scored the first five points and recorded a blowout, wire-to-wire victory - quickly evaporated.

As for MI, they're 13-6 ATS and 16-3 SU against good offensive teams who score 77 points per game or more. They were 4-for-24 from beyond the arc, a cool 17 percent, while making just 33 percent of their shots from the floor. The Wolverines led 38-28 with 13:50 to play. Just when it seemed MI would break free, on came the Seminoles with a 9-2 run to get within three at 40-37 on Phil Cofer's three-point play with 10 minutes left. Kentucky transfer Charles Mathews led all scorers with 17 points along with eight rebounds and has been one of the biggest impact transfers in college basketball this season. MI was just a bit better down the stretch and came away with a 58-54 victory over FSU before a packed and very loud Staples Center. Offensively, the Wolverines made just enough plays to take control.

MI guard Charles Matthews had 17 points and eight rebounds while Moritz Wagner added 12 points and six rebounds. A Zavier Simpson free throw upped Michigan's lead to 56-52 with 39 seconds left but Cofer's layup with 24 seconds left made it 56-54. No matter how hard they played on the other end, very few shots rolled in and dropped down when they most needed them as Florida State finished the game shooting 31.4 percent on 16 of 51. Could it be their first Final Four since 1979?

Staples Center was largely packed with maize-and-blue fans of the Wolverines, who have a vast alumni base in California.

Florida State: The loss ended an incredible run for coach Leonard Hamilton's Seminoles, who hit their stride at the ideal time.

The Seminoles went up by four with 6:16 left in the half on a hook shot by Cofer. MI held a 27-26 lead at halftime. They came out quickly in the second half with an 11-0 run after FSU scored on its first possession.

Beilein said he doesn't buy into the notion that everyone in San Antonio will be rooting against his team. The Wolverines were going inside and getting fouled.

When CBS Sports sideline reporter Dana Jacobson asked about the team's decision not to foul, Hamilton first seemed incredulous when saying, "The game was over".
