North Atlantic Treaty Organisation cuts Russian diplomats' access over nerve agent attack

In coordinated announcements of expulsions on Monday, fourteen European Union states including Germany, France, the Netharlands, Italy and Poland are expelling Russian diplomats in a response to the nerve agent attack on a former spy in the English city of Salisbury.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation moved on Tuesday to expel seven Russian officials from the country's mission to the organization, the latest act of reprisal against Moscow for the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy.

"I believe that yesterday's events could become a turning point", Johnson wrote, adding, "The Western alliance took decisive action and Britain's partners came together against the Kremlin's reckless ambitions".

Russia's ambassadors in Poland as well as Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have been summoned to those countries' foreign ministries, said the reports.

In the toughest action that President Donald Trump has taken against Russia since coming to office, the United States has said it will expel 60 Russians, including 12 intelligence officers from Russia's mission to the U.N. headquarters in NY.

"No one wants to put up with such loutish behavior and we won't", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on the sidelines of a conference in Uzbekistan.

Theresa May hailed the "unprecedented series of expulsions" of Russian diplomats across the globe following the assassination attempt against Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia earlier this month. Moscow has fiercely denied the charge and has pointed the finger at British intelligence.

And Moldova, the ex-Soviet nation whose pro-Western government is seeking closer ties with the West, on Tuesday also ordered three Russian diplomats to leave within seven days.

"Yesterday was a significant moment in our response to this reckless act of aggression, but there is still more to be done as we work with global partners on a long-term response to the challenge posed by Russian Federation", her spokesman reported May as saying.

Asked on Monday about a report that the USA would also expel Russian diplomats, presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia will act according to the principle of reciprocity.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Washington and its allies were acting "in response to Russia's use of a military-grade chemical weapon on the soil of the United Kingdom".

It is also closing the Russian consulate in Seattle.

Ireland followed suit today by chucking out one of their officials - following in the footsteps of the US, France, Germany, Spain and several others.

The Russian embassy in Washington responded by asking its Twitter followers to vote on which United States consulate should be closed, listing those in Vladivostok, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg as options.
