Patrick Reed says crowd favouring Rory McIlroy spurred him to Masters glory

There was just enough rain to take the sting out of the greens but not enough to cause havoc. No-one, though, could deny that he ended up as a worthy victor.

Reed was rock solid under the pressure, though, and whenever one of his rivals for the title moved into striking distance, he was able to respond.

Woods, a 14-time major champion playing his first Masters since 2015 following spinal fusion surgery, fired a 3-over 75 but reached the weekend on 4-over 148, delighting fans who stood 10-deep for a glimpse of the legend, whose last major win came at the 2008 US Open.

"So on the equipment side, I'm out there, just doing whatever I want", Reed said.

McIlroy's last Major win came at the 2014 PGA Championship but, at 28, he will have plenty more chances to win the Masters.

Jordan Spieth reacts after putting on the 18th hole during the fourth round at the Masters. That, in truth, was just a sign of the competitor in him.

He will always be a Masters champion.

On the wings of two eagles, so to speak, Patrick Reed stayed at the top of the Masters leaderboard and went back in time two years.

He finished joint-32nd yesterday morning (Singapore time) and was barely an after-thought at Augusta National as three players in their 20s battled for the Green Jacket.

Jordan Spieth was on fire to start his Sunday round, firing a 5-under 31 on the front nine to pull within as few as three shots of Patrick Reed's lead. That finger was pressed against the lips when he had the audacity to shush a Scottish crowd during his Ryder Cup debut in Gleneagles.

You won't find him on any social media channels during spring break in the Bahamas. If you win or lose your match, you still have a bunch of other guys there that could pick it up. Coming into the year one of my biggest goals was to win a major and compete in golf tournaments. Spain's Sergio Garcia became only the 10th defending champion to miss the cut after a 78 following his opening 81, the worst-ever round for a defending champion. In 12 rounds before this event he'd not broken 70.

Marc Leishman has let his run at a green jacket fall by the wayside after a birdieless third round.

"Whether it be mindset or whatever, I just didn't quite have it today". "It's about not getting psyched out about the week, getting psyched out about the greens, how fast and slopey they are, things like that". He can hit a fade on demand, as he showed with some of his drives on holes where left-to-right movement was needed.

You know, going into that, it just felt like, okay, well, that takes off a little bit of that pressure off of me and I can just go out and try to play golf. He chose to continue his golf career at the University of Georgia.

By the end of a wet and wild Saturday at Augusta National, Reed helped bring this Masters into focus. The fans, yes, were cheering for me, but some of them were cheering more for Rory. "Why don't you ask them?" he said.

"I feel like momentum is a huge thing, especially in final rounds", McIlroy said.

Reed started his college golf career at Georgia, but left the Bulldogs program after just one season after two alcohol-related arrests.

He also doesn't speak to his mum, dad or sister.

Reed did, though, swat aside the notion of him being an unpopular victor.

That will change next year with the advent of a new tournament next year, the Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship, which will be played the week before the Masters.
