Koreas set up hotline between their leaders

Koreas set up hotline between their leaders

At last month's meeting, Kim said he was hopeful that complicated conflicts could be resolved over a single phone call with Moon.

North Korea's abrupt diplomatic outreach in recent months came after a flurry of weapons tests, including the underground detonation of a possible thermonuclear warhead and three launches of developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles created to strike the USA mainland.

With just a week to go before Kim and Moon become the first North and South Korean leaders to meet in more than a decade, officials were trying to ensure the summit would proceed without incident or embarrassment.

Ahead of the talks, a hotline between the two capitals was reconnected Friday afternoon.

If war broke out with North Korea, there's no telling where the devastation would end.

If Communist China can exist side by side with capitalist United States, it should not be hard for the two Koreas to co-exist peacefully.

For decades, the US and South Korea have pushed for denuclearization in North Korea.

The U.S. should continue to build its military and diplomatic capacity to deter North Korea from aggressive behavior and continue economic pressure to ensure that North Korea can not obtain cash and supplies for its nuclear and missile programs.

"It was as if we were talking to a neighbour right next door", a South Korean official told local media after the call lasting 4 minutes 17 seconds.

According to Kim, South Korea will have two rehearsals, one on April 24 in the afternoon and one on April 26.

Trump, who is expected to hold his own much-anticipated summit with Kim later, previously offered his "blessing" for the two Koreas to discuss a treaty.

"We would certainly like to see an end, a formal end to the armistice, and that's something that we would support", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said during a regular press briefing. "If the meeting when I'm there is not fruitful, I will respectfully leave the meeting".

On the key dialogue agenda for the third summit would be the denuclearized Korean Peninsula as the DPRK leader expressed his commitment to the nuclear disarmament.

The decision is aimed at pursuing economic growth and peace on the Korean peninsular, state media report.

According to the official, Kim also said he expects the joint drills to be "readjusted" once the security situation on the Korean Peninsula stabilizes.

"As the weaponisation of nuclear weapons has been verified, it is not necessary for us to conduct any more nuclear tests or test launches of mid- and long range missiles or ICBMs", Mr Kim told a ruling party meeting.

Amid the diplomatic flurry, CNN reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping also planned to visit Pyongyang soon, after North Korean leader Kim made a surprise trip last month to China, its major sole ally.
