Australia investigating seven deaths in mass shooting

Seven people, including four children, were killed in a shooting near the Margaret River in western Australia on Friday, The Guardian reported.

Augusta-Margaret River Shire president Pamela Townshend said the people on Osmington Road were a tight sub-community.

"The loss of any life is tragic but four children and three adults, this is a significant tragedy. they do take their toll", he said.

"Police are now responding to what I can only describe as a horrific incident", Western Australia state Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said.

Police would not comment on the possibility of murder-suicide, but said they are not looking for a suspect.

Though, according to The Guardian, this is Australia's worst mass shooting since the Port Arthur Massacre in 1996.

The worst mass shooting in recent USA history was the Las Vegas shooting in October, where a gunman killed almost 60 people and injured more than 500. Dawson said he could describe it only as a "horrific incident".

"It's not only devastating for people who know the victims but there's this feeling of fear generated around violence and gun violence".

"Although the details of this tragedy are yet to come to light, Australia has a tragic history of higher rate of gun deaths in rural areas", she added. "Police were led to the property by a phone call before dawn", Dawson told CBS news. Police have not made a direct statement regarding the shooter and his or her motives. "Gun owners here always have been a powerful lobby, but they were surprisingly ineffective this time, despite support from the U.S. National Rifle Association".

Seven people were discovered dead on Friday in a mass murder in Australia, according to The Associated Press.

But a 2016 investigation by an Australian newspaper, the Age, found that gun-related crimes in Melbourne had doubled over the previous five years. Two firearms were also recovered.

The premier of Western Australia, Mark McGowan, called the deaths "shocking". A family friend stated that the children were homeschooled for they were diagnosed with Autism, The New York Times reports. Neighbors reported that the children were home-schooled there.

A month ago, Miles wrote on her Facebook page: "My ex does not stop stalking me", the Australian reports.

"It's sending shockwaves through the whole community - we're all linked in one way or another, every family", she told Fairfax.
