Anwar to be released in 'a matter of days', says Nurul

This comes after newly-minted Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V had consented to granting Anwar a full and immediate pardon.

Mahathir was sworn in as Malaysia's seventh premier late Thursday, a day after leading his four-party opposition alliance to a stunning election victory that ousted scandal-plagued Prime Minister Najib Razak and ended his coalition's 60-year unbroken grip on power. At the ripe age of 92, the very election of Mahathir Mohamad as the world's oldest Prime Minister signifies what in judicial terminology is the rarest of the rare... in the political narrative.

A full pardon is however required for him to re-enter politics because, as it stands, he is disqualified from being an MP for five years following his release.

He has now sought a royal pardon for Anwar ~ who is still languishing behind bars on a second charge of sodomy ~ and then make way for him to become Prime Minister.

He didn't say how long the process will take and whether Anwar could be freed before his sentence ends on June 8.

Anwar, 70, is now in Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital where he has been recuperating after a surgery.

"Mahathir has proven his tenacity, accepted past limitations, apologised and sacrificed his time and energy to raise the dignity of the people and the country", Anwar said. He has said Mr Anwar's wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, will be the deputy prime minister in his Cabinet.

"In the case of foreign affairs, we want to maintain good relations with all countries regardless of their policies", he said.

Mahathir said the country's attorney general was wrong to clear Najib in the 1MDB probe in 2016.

Malaysian markets were closed on Friday and will reopen on Monday, but overseas investors were nervous about Najib's ouster after a decade in office.

Dr Mahathir, dubbed the "Father of Modern Malaysia" during his previous 22 years in power until 2003 was known for his strong-arm, sometimes pugnacious style of rule, marked by an intolerance for dissent.
