World Health Organization to ship Ebola vaccine to DR Congo

The WHO also confirmed 39 suspected cases.

The new vaccine would mean that when a new Ebola case is diagnosed, all people who might have been in recent contact with them are traced and vaccinated to try and prevent the disease's spread, according to Reuters.

In addition, an experimental ebola vaccine, which was developed during the 2014 to 2016 Ebola epidemic but was too late to make an impact, will be deployed by the World Health Organization in the DRC.

The outbreak, which is believed to have started at least five weeks ago, was officially declared on May 8 after the DRC health ministry confirmed two positive tests from among a number of suspected Ebola cases in Bikoro and a village called Ikoko-Impenge, about 40 miles away.

Over the weekend, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported 7 more suspected cases of Ebola, raising the totals from April 4 through May 13 to 39 confirmed, suspected, and probable cases, including 19 deaths, for a case-fatality rate of 49%.

It said 393 people who identified as contacts of Ebola patients were being followed up.

"This outbreak is very close to the Republic of Congo and Central African Republic".

Laboratory results from a quarantine passenger at Uganda's Entebbe International Airport have showed negative for Ebola, an official said on Monday.

The WHO was widely criticised for reacting too slowly to the 2014-16 epidemic in West Africa.

Three health care workers are among those who have been infected.

Dr Peter Salama, deputy director-general of emergency preparedness and response for the World Health Organization, said: "Working with partners and responding early and in a coordinated way will be vital to containing this deadly disease". "This is a highly complex sophisticated operation in one of the most hard terrains on Earth", Salama said.

The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission, either through direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood or secretions or contact with materials that are contaminated with these liquids.

Elsewhere in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Direct Relief is also supporting the efforts of Save the Children to respond to the needs of displaced people, and continues to be in dialogue with Congolese health authorities in terms of where best to meet health needs throughout the country.

A cordon ribbon is seen around the isolation ward at Bikoro hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The epicenter, a town called Bikoro, is hard to reach by vehicle because of poor roads between it and the regional capital, Mbandaka.
