Facebook suspends 200 rogue apps over data scandal

Cambridge Analytica was later accused of using that database to help targeted campaigns during the USA presidential election in 2016.

In the statement he said: "We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can't then we don't deserve to serve you ..." I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again. Unlike many online publications, we don't have a paywall or run banner advertising, because we want to keep our journalism open, without influence or the need to chase traffic. If an app sticks out as potentially more nefarious than the rest, it'll get audited-with a failure to cooperate resulting in its banishment from Facebook.

"We suspended the myPersonality app nearly a month ago because we believe that it may have violated Facebook's policies", Archibong said Monday in response to an AFP inquiry. The company didn't reveal which apps it has kicked off the platform. Developers would have to get approval and sign a contract in order to even ask to obtain users' posts or additional data. The comprehensive interrogation will give the social media giant an idea of what kind of data and in what amount the app owners have access to.

In terms of what you can do with that information, well, not a great deal as the damage is already done. In the update, Archibong elaborated on Facebook's review process, explaining that they've divided their investigations into two phases. Facebook also declined to comment on what marks these apps as suspicious, but did say it would notify people if their data had been misused after the review process is complete. Archibong had also hinted that a team consisting of both internal and external auditors has been deployed in order to investigate all the apps which had a large number of user base. (Facebook didn't provide official numbers.) The 200 or so apps that have been suspended thus far will soon be examined more closely to see if they misused any data. The update notes that if evidence is found for apps misusing user data, it will show users whether they or their friends installed those apps before 2015.
