Strong to severe storms are possible this eveing

In the severe thunderstorm watch issued for the area through 9 p.m., the National Weather Service is calling for the potential for "widespread damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 miles per hour".

A tornado watch has been issued for the Capital Region and several nearby counties.

Although no funnel clouds were confirmed, the National Weather Service has received reports of downed trees and large hail in central Pennsylvania. This part of New Hampshire is almost 100 miles from the weather service radars in Gray, Maine and Taunton, Massachusetts.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has expanded the elevated "enhanced" risk for severe storms to include New York City, most of CT and most of MA, from just outside of Boston reaching to near Philadelphia.

Meteorologists issued a severe thunderstorm warning Monday evening for Osage County. However the severe threat is diminishing.

To go along with the strong winds and threats for hail and tornadoes today, heavy rainfall is always a factor with any strong or severe thunderstorm.

The National Weather Service cautions that the flash flooding risk is for small streams particularly in urban areas like Baltimore and Hagerstown. Areas in the Southern Valleys have not seen much in the way of rain and more sunshine this morning into the afternoon, making for favorable conditions for thunderstorm activity. The NWS out of Albany is saying to expect these storms to hit between Noon and 7 p.m.

Storms remain in the forecast for Wednesday and again Thursday as the front remains draped across the Ozarks. Skies will be partly cloudy tonight.
