Trump not backing down on 'spy' allegations

Democrats said Wednesday that the briefing - held as special counsel Robert Mueller investigates Trump's campaign and whether it was involved in Russian meddling in the USA election - was highly inappropriate and asked for the "Gang of Eight" briefing instead of Thursday's GOP-only meeting.

"If the spying was inappropriate, that means we may have an entirely illegitimate investigation", Giuliani said of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was sacked by Trump a year ago, tweeted Wednesday morning that the agency's use of secret informants was "tightly regulated and essential to protecting the country".

"A lot of bad things have happened".

Giuliani adds the White House may urge the Justice Department "to re-evaluate" the investigation.

This has been going on for over a year, and to the tune of how many millions of taxpayer dollars?

The new wrinkle, he said, if the disclosure about the informant.

The back and forth between Congress and the Justice Department over the Nunes request - one of many over the course of the Russian Federation investigation - has been simmering for weeks. Now, he seems to be fanning the flames of #SPYGATE to distract from the ongoing special counsel investigation and the mounting legal troubles for his associates.

Democrats said the meetings were conducted in part to assure lawmakers that no intelligence sources or methods were exposed while probing whether an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant spoke with Trump campaign advisers in 2016. The "Gang of Eight" includes the top Republicans and Democrats in each chamber and the top Republicans and Democrats on the House and Senate intelligence committees.

Anyway, President Trump ended up having a meeting with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein last week and came to an agreement.

Trump on Friday issued a string of accusatory Twitter messages asserting that the use of the informant was part of a political plot against him. "What did they get?"

He said that Comey is "corrupt" and that the Yonkers, N.Y. native "can't keep his big mouth shut". He's pleaded not guilty in both.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., attended the noon briefing as well because he was scheduled to travel to Texas for a fundraiser for House Republicans, according to an aide.

Initially offered only to Republicans, the briefings were the latest piece of stagecraft meant to publicize and bolster the allegations.

Rubio said he thinks the president and his lawyers are "reacting. they're responding to what, what they're facing and the things that are happening to them".

Flood and White House chief of staff John Kelly attended the start of the briefings before leaving. And the White House said Kelly would organize the meeting with House lawmakers to discuss the documents.

"He's not the subject or target of that investigation". Of course, it could turn out that the spying was wholly legitimate, although it is hard for me to separate this from the madness of so many now trying so vehemently to get rid of a duly elected president on grounds often highly suspicious. "And if Obama knew about it, why can't Trump?" The source was never "placed" or "embedded" in Trump's campaign. According to a USA official familiar with the broader of the two meetings, the briefers did not reveal the name of the informant. They brought documents but did not share them, and made several remarks about the importance of protecting intelligence sources and methods. The president intensified his attacks this week, calling it "spygate" and tweeting Thursday that it was "Starting to look like one of the biggest political scandals in USA history". A writer for the conservative media website The Federalist told Carlson that "everyone knows there was a Spy" in Trump's 2016 campaign.

It remains unclear what, if any, spying was done. The White House gave no evidence to support Trump's claim that President Barack Obama's administration was trying to spy on his 2016 campaign for political reasons.

A congressional source familiar with the meeting said that while present, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, a staunch Trump defender, did not speak at all, and that other Republicans present did not aggressively push or defend Trump's spying allegations. Some 22 individuals and entities have been charged by the special counsel's office so far, including several former members of the Trump presidential election campaign. Donald Trump's decision to cancel a June 12 summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un is the latest dramatic twist in relations between two leaders who traded insults before laying the groundwork for what would have been a stunning rapprochement.

A sizable group, 37 percent, though says if Mueller doesn't wrap up the investigation soon then Congress or Trump should shut it down.
