Sane cut from Germany squad for World Cup

Sane has been left out of the final 23-man selection, however, with Julian Brandt and fit-again Marco Reus preferred.

Many would argue Sane actually had a better and more consistent season than team-mate and wing-twin Raheem Sterling who is one of England's big hopes for Russian Federation.

This 'ere be German World Cup squad in full...

Sane must be gutted, as was Donovan in 2014, but at least the former USMNT star was able to have some fun at his own expense.

On the plus side for Walker though, Sane's exclusion means that if England do end up facing Germany, he'll be spared facing that terror this summer.

But Joachim Low left out the 22-year-old when he named his final 23-man squad for Russian Federation 2018 on Monday morning.

The Manchester City winger has not been included, with Bayer Leverkusen's Julian Brandt surprisingly preferred, with Low admitting that he wants more from the 22-year-old at worldwide level.

His worldwide form, however, is much poorer - he's only provided one assist and is yet to score following 12 appearances with the national side.

'Leroy is a huge talent, ' Low continued.

But apart from team-mate Kevin De Bruyne, no player in Europe's top five leagues had more assists than him.

Sane was cut from the squad with Timo Werner and the veteran Mario Gomez included as just two out-and-out strikers.

The big surprise of the announcement is the omission of Manchester City's Leroy Sane.

The 22-year-old winger has played his whole senior professional career with Bayer Leverkusen, with whom he finished fifth in the Bundesliga this season. He was named in Belgium's squad despite being troubled by yet another injury.

"That was a very close decision between him and Julian Brandt, which was made in favor of Brandt", said Low.
