Apple has new features to limit your phone addiction

"We think this is a clear win, not just for shareholders given how these new tools will strengthen Apple's ecosystem, but for parents, kids, and society in the years to come", the firm said in an e-mailed statement.

Parents will get even more information and oversight, including the ability to see their child's activity report from their own device and the power to schedule times (around bed time, for example) when certain apps can not be used. It shows you how long you've used each app and which apps send you the most notifications.

Apple also intends to crack down on data companies' ability to identify specific devices by creating a unique fingerprint based on a device's settings, installed fonts and plug-ins.

The company is bringing the Dolby Atmos surround-sound feature to Apple TV 4K devices, while Apple Watch's software gets a "Walkie Talkie" voice messaging feature that resembles the alternating one-way voice technology of the past. "For some of us it's become such a habit we don't even recognise just how distracted we've become", said Apple's senior vice-president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, according to a report in The Guardian.

At least as it's being conceived, the effort would build off of the business Apple runs of selling promotional ads for apps in its App Store, The Journal reported.

Apple generally has shied away from businesses that require sharing more data about its customers, but it may need to shift in a competitive market against ad giants Google and Facebook, who can deliver marketers some kind of assurance that their ads are reaching target audiences.

Apple rolled out new support for augmented reality as it unveiled a new format for digital objects that appear to live in the real world. Apple is also offering tools to give multiple users a different view of the same digital objects viewed from different angles.

Many Australian smartphone users also "feel addicted" to their smartphone, according to the Telsyte Australian Digital Consumer Study 2018. Third-party apps will now be able to let users invoke Siri for commonly used tasks, much the way competing assistants from Google and Amazon long have.

The software update will also let people group similar tasks together into shortcuts that can be accessed by simple phrases like "heading home".

In Safari, "Intelligent Tracking Prevention" will block social media "Like" or "Share" buttons from collecting information from users without permission. When a friend receives photos from an event, Apple will then suggest that the friend reciprocate with photos from the same event. And Group FaceTime is integrated with group Messages chats so you can take a text chat into the video chat.
