Trump Congratulates California GOP After Big Primary Night — BLUE WAVE CRASHING

With no one to support at the top of the state ticket, the concern was that GOP voters would sit the election out, giving Democrats a big advantage in House races across the state that could help swing control of US Congress.

Democrats were fighting to avoid a similar potential calamity in California's many competitive House districts, considered critical in their quest seize control of Congress this fall. Menendez probably won't put the seat at risk for the Democrats in November - one recent poll shows a close general election race there, but two others don't - but with another Democratic nominee who didn't have Menendez's baggage, the seat would be nearly certain to remain blue. It could take days to sort out who will advance in several key Southern California races for U.S. House.

Yet nightmare scenarios exist for both parties.

Across the country in Montclair, New Jersey, Lynnette Joy Baskinger, a psychotherapist, said she's fed up with the GOP.

Significant contests also played out elsewhere on Tuesday.

Delaine Eastin, a Democrat, is a former state superintendent of public instruction. The jury deadlocked, but Republicans hope to use Menendez's legal troubles to tar other Democrats like Sherrill across the state. "If you look at the results from the primary you will see a unified party ready to stand up to Trump".

Recognizing the high stakes, Trump sought to energize his supporters in a series of tweets praising his preferred California Republican candidates. "He will make a BIG difference!"

Trump will not be on the ballot this year.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, for example, most of the voters at Berkeley City Hall were dropping off ballots they had received by mail. It was still unclear whether a Republican would earn enough votes to oppose her on California's November ballot. "They were separated by about 286,000 votes".

"He was already mayor of Los Angeles and I saw him do a lot for the Hispanic community", she said after casting her ballot.

"I still consider myself an independent, but I just won't vote Republican because of what's going on", she said. With 414 of 415 precincts reporting early Wednesday, Rohrabacher easily won a spot on the November ballot. But investigators said she frequently used vulgar language, which Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon said constituted sexual harassment. Republican registration has fallen for years and the party has not won a statewide contest in more than a decade, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was re-elected governor in 2006.

That remains to be seen, as voters in seven other states went to the polls.

Yet the state's unusual election laws complicate things for both sides.

A loss by Villaraigosa would take him out of the race for governor since in California's primary system, the top two vote-getters move on to the general election, regardless of party. That allows the possibility of two candidates from the same party qualifying.

Cox got about a quarter of the votes counted so far in Tuesday's election to easily outdistance former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for second to Newsom, who won by a comfortable margin. Feinstein has responded to the challenge by tacking to the left, and leads de Leon in most polls.

Tim Gannon, a farmer who worked for Tom Vilsack when he was governor and USA secretary of agriculture, is the sole Democratic candidate.

Failure to do so would have dealt a massive blow to Republican morale and suppressed party turnout.

CORRECTION (June 6, 2018, 11:02 a.m.): An earlier version of this article incorrectly described a Republican candidate for the U.S. House seat in South Dakota as the chief of staff to the governor.

That's money the Democrats would have preferred to spend promoting their candidates this fall.

"In High Tax, High Crime California, be sure to get out and vote for Republican John Cox for Governor".

There are other kinds of drama playing out in other parts of the country.

But Democrats may have gotten too excited about these pickup opportunities for their own good.

Republican businessman Bob Hugin claimed the Republican nomination to face Menendez this fall.

Tester's brand has withstood close races before, and Gov. Steve Bullock showed in 2016 that Democrats can win in Montana in the Trump era. State Auditor Matt Rosendale and former judge Russ Fagg are the top contenders for the GOP nomination. In a fight against Newsom, his voice could force a more realistic and nuanced discussion as to how the state would pay for a single payer system, projected by some to require the state health care spend to double, and require Medicare and Medicaid waivers, which are not likely give the federal climate on health care.

A little perspective on the significance of Deb Haaland's win tonight (and her likely win in Nov). If Noem wins, she'd be on her way to becoming the state's first female governor. Haaland, for example, served as state party chair before running for Congress.
