Afghanistan ready for maiden test against top-ranked India

Afghanistan took on India in their debut first Test match today at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore with the likes of Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane all featuring for the home team in the absence of skipper Virat Kohli.

It will be Afghanistan's first test match after gaining the status of test playing nation a year ago.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said on Thursday the national cricket team was a source of pride to the war-ravaged country as it took on India in a historic first test match and he urged other cricketing nations to take on the team. Originating from Khost province, he is a nephew of Noor Ali Zadran, with whom he played alongside for Afghanistan in ODIs in December past year. The cricket authorities in Afghanistan and Pakistan, could join hands, in their efforts to bring global cricket back to their respective countries. But don't tell that to Stanizai, who says that his team's spin bowlers will outduel India's world-class veteran "spin twins, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, he boasted to the Times of India".

Afghanistan recently acquired test status and will play its first test match against India in Bangalore on June 14-18. Not many people knew Afghanistan play cricket but for them to come along so well, qualify for the World Cup and qualify for upcoming World Cup deserves a lot of credit. With India's batsmen not as adept at spin as the wristy yesteryear players, Afghanistan might be better placed than some of India's recent foes at home.

"India are number one in Test cricket and, especially when they play at home, they are unbelievable and it's really hard to beat them in India", he said. "I am proud of the men who championed cricket in Afghanistan in the dawn of the century and believed in themselves that one day Afghanistan will play against the best in the world", the message read.

A spark lit in the bleak environs of refugee camps in Pakistan has in spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman in particular found the torch-bearers who have carried Afghanistan swiftly to a format that is still regarded as the pinnacle of cricket.

If Mujeeb Ur Rahman is selected in the team then he will become the first player to be born in the 21st century to play Test cricket.

"Skill-wise, it won't make a difference, but our attitude matters, to make a quick switch, in terms of our mindset from T20s to Test cricket". At the same time, we will not be taking them lightly. This alone makes the contest between them and the Indian bowlers, in particularly Ashwin and Jadeja, a mouth watering one.

The sensational wrist spinner, Rashid Khan, still few months short of his 20 birthday, is set to be the star attraction in the country's first-ever Test match.

It also reached the Super Ten stage in the World T20 in 20016 and beat eventual champions West Indies in a league match.
