AMC Challenges Moviepass With New Subscription Service

AMC Challenges Moviepass With New Subscription Service

AMC, which has blocked MoviePass sales at some of its theaters, has been a vocal opponent of MoviePass' model.

AMC's service (launching June 26) may be double what MoviePass is, but you get more perks like being able to see IMAX and Real 3D movies, and see the same movie multiple times.

Theatres on Wednesday said it would launch a subscription service that will allow customers to watch up to three movies per week for a monthly fee, challenging a rival service offered by MoviePass. Guests can also reserve tickets in advance, regardless of their distance to the theater they wish to visit.

Conversely, the MoviePass unlimited plan is still cheaper at $9.99 per month to see one movie a day, though the company has recently implemented cost-savings and anti-fraud measures like ticket verification and limits on repeat viewings of the same film.

AMC will soon be offering its vast clientele a premium subscription service called "AMC Stubs A-List", which will give theatre-goers the chance to watch three movies a week for $19.95 per month. Will AMC Theaters lose money on this service? AMC initially explored legal means to stop MoviePass from working in its theaters, and amid escalating animosity, MoviePass briefly stopped supporting AMC theaters in prime locations in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and others.

The largest movie chain in America is creating a service that will rival subscription-based ticketing company MoviePass.

"We believe that our current and future loyal guests will be interested in this type of program, as AMC Stubs A-List rewards guests with something that no one else offers: the very best of AMC, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema and RealD 3D up to 3 times per week, for one simple, sustainable price", Aron said.

AMC Theatres shares rose almost 2.5% on the announcement. MoviePass subscribers typically need to wait a few weeks for their card to arrive in the mail. This includes free upgrades on popcorn and soda, free refills on large popcorn, express service at the box office and concession stand, no online ticketing fees, and a points reward system.
