Trump tweet on Harley-Davidson move after tariff, European Union trade fight

US President Donald Trump continued his attacks on the legendary Harley-Davidson motorcycle company Wednesday, warning "we won't forget" after the firm said it planned to shift some manufacturing offshore.

European Union officials suggested Trump had only himself to blame for the falling-out with a company he had previously hailed as "a true American icon".

Moving the production global will allow Harley-Davidson to avoid tariffs the European Union imposed in retaliation for Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs.

Trump has also threatened Harley-Davidson with a "big tax" on bikes which are manufactured overseas and then imported into the US.

Trump says on Twitter, "We won't forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!" But company spokesman Michael Pflughoeft said it was assessing the potential impact of the production shift on its USA facilities. But Trump says that's an excuse and threatened the company with a "big tax" if they move their plant. "I was the one that explained to Harley about 100 per cent tax in India. and I got it down to a much lower number. which is, I think, 50 per cent, which is far too much, but they were paying 100 per cent".

Surprised that Harley-Davidson, of all companies, would be the first to wave the White Flag.

"Our decision to move some of our operations is 100% based on President Trumps tariffs".

On Tuesday, Trump tweeted about two earlier decisions Harley made to open the new plant in Thailand and close one in Missouri. Companies are now coming back to America. The company has said ramping up production overseas could take at least nine to 18 months. Harley-Davidson is using that (tariff on steel and aluminum) as an excuse.

The company already produces some parts and bikes overseas, including in India and Thailand, where they would otherwise face high tariffs.

Rising trade tensions and retaliatory tariffs could pose serious risks for Harley-Davidson, rating agency Moody's said on Tuesday.

Harley-Davidson executives met with Trump at the White House a year ago after Trump canceled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned.

Last year, Harley-Davidson announced it would build a plant in Thailand after Trump pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, which would have abolished tariffs on their motorcycles across 40 percent of the world's economy.
