Federal judge declines to ease deadlines for government to reunite separated families

With a mere four days left, government attorneys have asked for more time - and some migrant parents say they have been given no information about how these court-ordered reunifications will take place.

Children under the age of 5 must be reunited with their parents within 14 days, and the administration has 30 days to reunite children forcibly separated after arriving at the southern border with their parents.

USA officials have asked for more time to reunite migrant families separated at the Mexican border because some parents have already been deported.

CUTTING CORNERS? According to Azar, fewer than 3,000 migrant children are now separated from their families.

In a motion filed late Thursday, the Justice Department said it had devoted "immense" resources to reunifying parents and children since June 26, when the judge imposed deadlines on the government for returning children to their families.

The government is using DNA testing to verify that parents are related to the children they claim.

Under the approach, parents and other caregivers apprehended after crossing the border were arrested and jailed, and the government placed their children with HHS. Sixteen children had not been matched, and it remained unclear if they crossed with their parents, she said.

The ORR program "was not created to track the circumstances" behind a child's arrival in the U.S., Azar said, and the Department of Homeland Security didn't tell the refugee agency which children were taken from parents and which came over the border unaccompanied. Its database has some information about the children's parents but was not created to reunify families by the court's deadline.

"As HHS continues to evaluate the impact of the District Court ruling, and given the constantly changing number of unaccompanied alien children in our care (every day minors are referred to our care and released from our care to parents, close relatives or suitable sponsors), we are providing the total number of unaccompanied alien children in the care of HHS-funded grantees".

Sabraw had mandated that the government reunite children younger than five with their parents on June 26.

The Trump administration confirmed on Monday that it will not meet the deadline set by a federal judge for reuniting parents with their young children. This week, the states asked a federal judge in Seattle to expedite discovery in the case, arguing that the government has not turned over key information - about its own policies, separated families, and asylum seekers refused entry to the country - in response to repeated requests from state officials. "Parents have a choice" when they're removed from the country to leave their children behind, he said.

"I am very encouraged about the progress", Sabraw said on Monday, according to the newspaper. "At the same time, however, the Government has a strong interest in ensuring that any release of a child from Government custody occurs in a manner that ensures the safety of that child".

Sabraw, the federal judge in California, had ordered that federal officials provide detained immigrant parents with a way to contact their kids by Friday.
