WhatsApp to limit message forwarding to five chats in India

WhatsApp to limit message forwarding to five chats in India

WhatsApp did not say what the limit on forwarded messages would be elsewhere, but in India specifically, they will be limited to five chats at a time, whether among individuals or groups.

The company said: "We believe that these changes - which we'll continue to evaluate - will help keep WhatsApp the way it was created to be: A private messaging app".

The chat platform has made it really convenient to forward messages in one go to a large group of people and the small quick forward button placed beside the media files in the chat has a big role to play in this.

"When rumours and fake news get propagated by mischief-mongers, the medium used for such propagation can not evade responsibility and accountability", it said.

So what changes for the WhatsApp users in India? As you can imagine, the details of these unfortunate events are chilling, but perhaps WhatsApp's upcoming forwarding limits can help stop the bloodshed. "If they remain mute spectators they are liable to be treated as abettors and thereafter face consequent legal action". It's also set up an internal group to look into other measures the company can take, and consider sending a second notice to force WhatsApp to do more. WhatsApp is calling these changes "a test" and will be monitoring the effect they have to decide if they will become permanent.

Senior IT ministry officials The Wire spoke - and who WhatsApp officials met over the last few weeks - said that it was an attempt at to make forwarding messages "drudgery".

Earlier this month, WhatsApp in response to a call from India's technology ministry, said it required a partnership with the government as well as society in general to curb the spread of false information on its platform. Not only that, but the instant messaging company will also be removing the quick forward button which appears next to the media message.

This new rule of banning forward messages is right now being tested, and shall be available to all users very soon. But elsewhere in Asia and beyond, WhatsApp and other tech firms have come under fire for the spread of "fake news".

Officials from WhatsApp's USA office are in India this week to meet with digital literacy organizations and civil society leaders to discuss the spate of violence that has prompted calls for control the spread of viral content on the app.

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp is launching a test to limit message forwarding in India, following a series of violent incidents in the country triggered by rumors and fake messages on WhatsApp.

We find WhatsApp efforts on this matter admirable, considering the company could have just ignored the problem altogether, since it only provides the means for people to send messages.
