Smartphones with 48-megapixel cameras are coming

Thanks to the ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8?m, Sony was able to pack 48 effective megapixels onto a 1/2-type (8.0 mm diagonal) sensor size. The result should be bright, low noise images, Sony says.

It's also worth noting that modern chipsets are so fast that they can double up, with oversampling or pixel binning from this Sony sensor and multiple exposure combination, producing computational images that are super-pure.

'This product was designed and manufactured with techniques that improve light collection efficiency and photoelectric conversion efficiency over conventional products, resulting in the world's first*3 0.8 μm pixel size, with both high sensitivity and high saturation signal level'.

While record-breakingly small pixels allow for higher-resolution images from a smaller sensor, larger pixels have more surface area and take in more light; the bigger the pixels, the better the low-light performance.

So to speak, the new sensor was created to improve light collection efficiency and photoelectric conversion efficiency, even when in zooming in, the image quality won't be as blurred as its predecessors. The new sensor features 48 effective megapixels, the industry's highest pixel count. That means photos will be captured with the equivalent of a 12-megapixel camera with 1.6-micron pixels, which should increase detail when a photo is zoomed in on.

Sony IMX586 will cram 48 megapixels into smartphone cameras
48MP Sony IMX586 imaging sensor announced, samples ship September

More importantly, the IMX586 utilizes a Quad Bayer color filter where each 2×2 pixels use the same color.

Sony will start shipping samples of the IMX586 camera sensor in September 2018, which means that the first smartphones sporting this sensor are expected to ship in early 2019.

For bright low-noise photos and videos when shooting at night.

Finally, Sony says that this sensor is better placed for HDR capture because it has a four times great dynamic range than other sensors. It's possible that Apple could use this sensor in its future iPhones models.
