Amnesty International calls for united front against Saudi Arabia

The European Commission said it's seeking clarification about the arrest of activists in Saudi Arabia.

In this file photo, Saudian lawyer and human rights activist Waleed Abu al-Khair's wife, Samar Badawi, receives the Olof Palme prize at the 2nd chamber of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm, Jan. 25, 2013.

The dispute appears to have been sparked by tweets from Canadian diplomats, including one from Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, who said she was "very alarmed" by news of the arrest of Samar Badawi, the sister of prominent activist and writer Raif Badawi. In 2014, the Canadian unit of US weapons maker General Dynamics Corp (GD.N) won a contract worth up to $13 billion to build light-armored vehicles for Saudi Arabia, in what Ottawa said was the largest advanced manufacturing export win in Canadian history.

"The Kingdom views the Canadian position as an affront to the Kingdom that requires a sharp response to prevent any party from attempting to meddle with Saudi sovereignty", according to a statement by the Saudi foreign ministry.

"Instead of pursuing human rights reform, the government of Saudi Arabia has chosen to lash out with punitive measures in the face of criticism", said Samah Hadid, Amnesty International's Middle East Director of Campaigns.

Saudi Arabia says it will withdraw all of its students studying in Canada in an intensifying feud between the two countries.

A Saudi Twitter account shared a photo of a plane flying toward Toronto's skyline, evoking images of the September 11 terror attacks.

The image was later reshaped with the plane removed.

The Canadians expressed outrage at the overwhelming response from the Saudis, with Freeland issuing a statement saying Canadian "deeply concerned".

"We will always speak up for human rights, we will always speak up for women's rights around the world", she told reporters in Vancouver. "We will never hesitate to promote these values and we believe that this dialogue is critical to global diplomacy", Freeland stated in a release.

In recent months Saudi Arabia has lifted a ban on women driving, but it has also arrested activists, including more than a dozen high-profile campaigners for women's rights. But the Trump administration is not taking a side in this fight.

"It is completely unacceptable for other countries to think their modules and experiences allow them to interfere in our internal matters", said the UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on Twitter.

The airline now operates at least two routes flying out of Toronto's Pearson International Airport - one to the Saudi capital city of Riyadh, the other to the city of Jeddah. "I refer you to the Canadian and Saudi Ministries of Foreign Affairs for further information".

Saint Mary's University estimated there are about 100 students from Saudi Arabia studying at their campus while there were 80 at Mount Saint Vincent during the winter semester.

York University, meanwhile, says 115 Saudi students are now enrolled at the Toronto university and that it is also awaiting further information.
